The 61 AH/ 680 Ashura movement has since been a historic and epoch-making movement against the Umayyid tyranny, oppression, and corruption, with its roots in Islamic religio-moral origins. It has since implied seeking freedom, with steadfastness on the rightful side. There were other anti-Umayyid movements after the Ashura movement. They were the movements of Zayd b. Ali, Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr, the Repentanrs, and that of al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi were other instances. Such aspects of leadership, phases of struggle, and historical consequences show that although they intended to be anti-Umayyid movements, only the Ashura movement aimed to make fundamental reforms, hence it has since exerted long-lasting implications throughout history
