Abstract
The Ashura episode has long absorbed a considerable portion, and has made a major motif, of contemporary Persian literary works. Focusing on the literary works of four prominent Iranian poets, it is shown that they focus on religio-heroic figures plus certain situational and temporal aspects of Ashura. As such, their contents are limited to merely emotive aspects, rather they also highlight extra-epical, symbolic, political, and mystical dimensions.
