Outstanding Sunni sources indicate that the Umayyad hegemony and, on top of it, Yazid were intent to martyr Imam al-Husayn. For practicalizing this sinister plot, Yazid ordered the governors of Medina and Mecca to assassinate him. However, it was `Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad who committed tgis crime, all owing to the public infidelity of a great majority of Kufans. Sunni sources paid attention to the details of Imam al-Husayn's martyrdom, hence its historical details in their sources, all indicative of its tragicalness. This paper attempts to survey the heart-rending details of his martyrdom and those that pertain to the captivity of his survivors.
