Imam al-Husayn and Ashura are among the topics Western orientalists paid attention to. The present paper focuses on certain French orientalists. Based in a descriptive-cum-analytical study, the core of this study is how objectively French orientalists got to the depth of Imam al-Husayn's movement. It is concluded that they have barely been able to sense the depth of both Imam al-Husayn's character and the essence of Ashura as represented from the Shiite perspective.
