Abstract
The Ashura rites and rituals mirror a well-grounded system whose function is remaking and giving meaning to Shi'i identity and reinforcing their integration. Based on Clifford Geertz's framework of meaning creation and its significance in producing identity, the present study seeks to produce an analysis of the Arbaeen ritual signs and symbols. The main signs and symbols are as follows: flags, banners, inscriptions, headbands, racksacks, cradles, metal gratings, abayas, scarfs, the Karbala dust, and the blessed clothes distributed in and for the rituals.
