Abstract
The present paper focuses on the martyrdom fate and account (maqtal) of Ali al-Akbar, the elder martyred son of Imam al-Husayn. It deals with various aspects of his martyrdom account as rendered in Ashura sources. In the maqtal sources, he is credited with being the first Hashimid martyr, the perfect lookalike of the Prophet Muhammad, and that at his martyrdom, Imam al-Husayn wept and cursed his slayers
