The Ashura martyr Qasim was a son of the second Infallible Imam alHasan al-Mujtaba. This paper suggests that he was the second and younger son of his father. To join the battlefield, he sought permission from his paternal uncle, Imam al-Husayn. His request was first rejected, followed by a consent at last. His slayer was Umar b. Sa`d al-Azdi. There are some accounts and quotes ascribed to him, eg, his remark that death was sweeter than honey to him, that his body was trampled, and he had had his wedding on the eve of Ashura.
