The spiritual journey to sacred places, referred to in Islamic culture as pilgrimage (ziyārah), is a multifaceted phenomenon that has exerted profound social, cultural, and economic influences on Muslim societies. Beyond being merely an act of worship, pilgrimage has functioned as a driving force in shaping collective identity and fostering
the spiritual advancement of Muslim communities. Using a descriptive–analytical methodology, this study examines the central role of pilgrimage in the civilizational development of the Islamic world. The findings indicate that pilgrimage, as a socio-spiritual institution, has fulfilled several important functions, including establishing extensive communication networks among Muslim communities, facilitating cultural and scholarly exchange, promoting the economic prosperity of pilgrimage cities and the routes leading to them, contributing to the development of distinctive Islamic architecture and art, and strengthening social solidarity among followers of different Islamic schools of thought. Throughout Islamic history, pilgrimage has served as a means of preserving historical continuity and transmitting cultural heritage. Historical evidence demonstrates that pilgrimage routes, much like trade routes, played a significant role in cultural and civilizational exchange. In Islamic thought, pilgrimage represents the manifestation of humanity’s spiritual connection with God through honoring His chosen saints and righteous servants. By reinforcing the spiritual dimension of collective life, this religious and social practice has contributed to the formation of a civilization centered on spirituality
