After the Kufans learned that Imam al-Husayn refused to recognize Yazid and left Medina for Mecca, they started writing numerous letters and sent them to him via various couriers. However, there has occured several mistakes in the number of the letters. Based on the earliest accounts written up to the 6th/ 13th century, the number was around 150 letters. However, in the 7th/ 14th century, Ibn Nima al-Hilli and Sayyid b. Tawus raise its number to 12,000, and the recent works raise it to 18,000. Comparing and focusing in the number of those who paid an oath of allegiance to Muslim b. `Aqil, who were recorded to be ranging from 12,000 to 18,000, on the one hand, and the letters dispatched, on the other hand, it suggests that there might have occured some mistakes in recording this statistics. This is because sending such a huge number of letters at that time seem rather implausible
